When the skies darken and the gales of November whip up 20-foot waves on Lake Superior, Kitchi-gami ("Big Sea" in the native Ojibwe language) becomes one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world. Ships must find safe harbor or find the bottom. "The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead," as Gordon Lightfoot so memorably sang in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Mataafa storm of November 27-28, 1905 claimed the lives of 36 seamen on 29 wrecked vessels, including the schooner barge Madeira, which foundered on the rocks of Silver Bay, Minnesota. The decision was made to erect a lighthouse near the spot as a guide to future mariners. Perched on a 133-foot tall sheer cliff, the Split Rock Lighthouse, first lit on July 31, 1910, became an instant tourist attraction and remains to this day one of the most picturesque and visited lighthouses in the United States.

Ugears' Split Rock Lighthouse model is a beautiful DIY wooden reproduction of the iconic Minnesota beacon. With its warm LED light, the model also serves as a functional nightlight for your home, office, or a child's bedroom. Once complete, you can sit back and admire your charming creation and the warm glow it gives any room and imagine the life of a lighthouse keeper on a windswept cliff along the shores of Lake Superior.
